REAL STYLE | JOE & ANGIE MERTZ | MERTZ PRODUCTIONS
After meeting with Joe and Angie for a quick “getting to know ” interview I had to share with them that, for many months I have been hearing the name “JOE MERTZ” from many people. Having conversations with various people about what I do for a living always ends up with, “Do you know Joe Mertz?” I was beginning to think that I really needed to find out who he is and what he does. Little did I know, that the same mom and kids that I have been “eyeing” (I’ve seen Angie all around, school, dance school with a tot on her arms, a toddler walking beside her, a son and a 9 year old dancer.) also happened to be his wife. I used to think quietly that I would like to approach this mom and her beautiful kids. Then finally at a random craft day event in school, my 6yr old’s classmate turned out to be Joe and Angie’s son. Small world. I knew then that I would really love to do a feature on the Mertz family and get to know them a little bit more. I am so glad I did!
Joe Mertz, founder of Mertz Productions. Live event production based in Central Florida with clients such as Aeropostle, Tommy Hilfiger, Busch Gardens, Outback Steakhouse and more is THE MAN behind the scenes. But in the Mertz family, they’re the COUPLE behind these gorgeous and talented kids!
JOE ON CAREER
LPF: Event production is a fun, creative and difficult industry. Many people would love to get creative and produce an event for other people or brands -
HOW DID YOU GET INTO EVENT PRODUCTION? AND CAN YOU SHARE WITH US HOW LONG IT TOOK FOR YOU TO BE WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
JOE : ”I got started in the entertainment world as a technician at Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA during high school and college. After graduating with an engineering degree, I moved to Orlando and eventually began my career in live event production at Walt Disney World in their special events department starting in 1997. I spent two and a half years working multiple events in various disciplines. I ended my career with them after the Super Bowl Halftime show in 2000. By July of 2001, I had started my own production company. Since then I have produced events for Aeropostale, Busch Gardens, Tommy Hilfiger, Outback Steakhouse, and many other companies. It has taken all of that time to get where I am today. Each event is a learning experience and I continue to work hard to get better on each and every project. It is a never ending process.”
LPF: You have a list of big clients such as Coca Cola, Tommy Hilfiger, Aeropostale to name a few and all in different industries, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR JOB?
JOE: “I love when we take an idea from our client’s brain and make it a reality. They have a vision of something, but they don’t have the ability to bring it to life. That’s where we come in. We take that simple idea and transform it into something you can see, hear, and feel. When you see that sense of wonderment and amazement on your client’s face as they are looking at their vision in its final form, you can’t beat that feeling.”
LPF: Where do you find inspiration in creating a concept for your clients?
JOE: “I design the space first. I like to lay out the room and the stage before I get other designers involved in the specific theatrical disciplines. The bulk of my job is focused on bringing the designers and the creators together. I search for the best creative talent for the job to get connected with the client, so they can be inspired and then create that concept. It is important that I get the right person in that role. If I get that part wrong, the concepts will fall flat with the client and they won’t sell. I have a great pool of creative resources that I can pick and choose from based on the goals and objectives of the project. When I put together the right team, the end product is exceptional.”
LPF: Do you partake in events and functions for Mertz Productions? If yes, what are your favorite functions?
ANGIE: “I don’t have time to partake in many of the events, but I have been to Busch Gardens for Howl-O-Scream many times. It is my favorite one to experience when I get the chance.”
LPF: Having 4 children with different and busy schedules must be tiring, how do you and Angie balance your time with work, selves and children.
“We sync our phones and calendars to try and stay on top of everything. The hardest part is driving the kids everywhere they need to be. Luckily we have a serious carpool going on and awesome babysitters to help! To stay connected with one another, we have an in house “date night” every Sunday. We put the kids to bed, then we order chicken wings and hang out on the couch together. We watch Football, catch up on our TV shows or chat. It is a fun tradition to ensure that we take time to spend with just each other.”
LPF: When you’re not working, what do you do for fun?
JOE: ” I spend time with the kids. I want to do what they want to do. If they are having fun then I am having fun. We like to go to amusement parks or water parks. We also just like to go outside. We’ll go for a bike ride or I will just sit outside with them as they play. I just love to watch them experience things. I get to experience things all over again with them. It’s so much fun. I constantly tell people the best job in the world is being a dad. Beyond that, you can usually find me trying to enlighten someone on the benefits of libertarianism.”
LPF: Your daily routine can be very hectic, what do you do relax?
ANGIE: “After a long day and the kids are in bed, I will make myself a hot tea or pour a glass of wine and relax on the couch.”
LPF: Meeting your family has been a great pleasure. Your children are all beautiful, fun and smart. I love how you both described each of them. Do you plan to have anymore children?
“No, our family is complete. We are excited to move on to the next phase of family life that doesn’t involve diapers, cribs, and safety locks.”
“Go on a cruise! We all love cruising. We are addicted!!! ”
JOE & ANGIE
LPF: How would you describe your style?
Joe : ” Comfortable. I would wear anything that doesn’t make me hot or uncomfortable in any way. I like to wear dressy shirts and blazers, but it is tough in Florida to do that and still feel comfortable.”
Angie: ” I like to dress very casual. I wear jeans whenever possible. Sometimes I will wear a sundress in the summer time. I wear Flip Flops all the time! I love them!”
LPF: Who is your favorite designer?
“We really don’t have any favorites.”
Favorite place to shop?
Joe :” I like to shop at the Mall at Millenia. It’s a great architectural space. I am just happy when I’m in that building and walking around. It also has great shops in there.”
Angie : ” Actually, almost everything I own comes from Target. When I’m looking for something nicer, I like to go to the Florida Mall. I like to check out Macy’s and Nordstrom.”
LPF: As a mom, what are your 5 purse must haves
ANGIE: “Hand Sanitizer, Sharpie, Chapstick, Kleenex and a Hair Clip”. SC|LPF
